1) EATING WELL AND MINDFULLY: LIVING A MEDITATIVE LIFE
by Dr. Robert Puff

You may ask yourself, “What do meditation and eating have to do with each other?” The answer is that they actually have a great deal to do with each other. What happens during the day is that we tend to get so busy that we’re not 100% present with “what is” and we really miss out on wonderful experiences that occur throughout the day. This includes important moments in everyday life, like eating.

I’d like you to make a conscious effort of the moment you are in while eating. When you are eating, eat slowly. Eat with presence and be 100% aware of what it is you are eating. Take a bite of whatever it is that you are eating and feel it in your mouth. Taste it and recognise all of the flavor it actually has. You will realise that food is so much better when you take your time and you eat it mindfully, with presence.

What often happens is that we can get so busy and caught up in our day that even the most scrumptious meal is lost in haste. Sometimes you will think back on a holiday that someone prepared a wonderful meal for you and you literally scoffed it down so quickly that you didn’t truly appreciate all the work, all the flavor and all the content of what you enjoyed.

Perhaps your mother or your grandmother put so much work into making this meal and was so proud of it, yet you didn’t truly get the opportunity to enjoy it to its fullest because of the “rush” of the holiday. You rushed to continue on with the festivities and didn’t realise until later how wonderful or how much thought and love was put into that dinner created especially for you!

It’s the same way in your everyday moments of eating. We get caught up in what has to be done and where we have to be next. We rush through a drive-thru and place a mindless order to simply fill our immediate need of quieting our stomach. Sometimes we even eat without realising what or how much we eat. This is mindless eating and what I want you to start doing is the exact opposite of “mindless” eating. I want you to begin “mindful” eating. I want you to realise how good food can taste, how relaxing it can be to take the time to sit, relax and be in the moment with your food.

What you will find when you take the time to eat with presence, with mindfulness, is that food is so much better. Meditation is all about following your breath, being present in the moment and using these techniques while eating will allow you to realise that the food tastes better. It will give you a pleasurable experience because you have taken the time to enjoy each and every little part of the food you are enjoying. When you are hurried through your eating what you really miss out on is allowing the food and the pleasure of eating it to occur.

Why we suffer through life so much is because we often miss out on what’s around us. We don’t savour the moments, savour the view, or savour the life. It’s the same way with eating. You need to stop and savour the food. Enjoy being with the food, enjoy tasting the food and enjoy slowing down to enjoy the entire experience. Spend time with your taste buds that God gave you and you will find your meals will become a wonderful, pleasant experience.

Of course this means that you need to set aside time for eating. Don’t rush; don’t eat while doing other things. You will begin to realise that food can have flavor and be a good, beautiful experience. A wonderful side effect of this is that you will find you have given your stomach the chance to realise it’s full. You will eat less because you are enjoying the food slowly.

You will enjoy the moment with the food you have chosen and realise the flavors and the beautiful experience of nourishing your body with both mindful eating and mindful thoughts. I think you will be surprised at how much better your experience with food will be when you approach eating like you approach meditating. You will find enjoyment in taking the time to relax and eat slowly. Your body will enjoy the time it gets to truly experience the food you are giving it and it will repay you by acknowledging a feeling of content from the nourishment you have provided.

2) 3 REASONS YOUR HAIR IS THINNING – AND WAYS TO TREAT IT
by Teresa Manring

Hair loss isn’t something only men have to deal with. Up to 40 percent of complaints about hair loss actually come from women. Seeing a little — or a lot — of extra hair in the drain can not only be very upsetting for women, it can also be a sign of an underlying imbalance in the body that needs to be addressed.

If you’ve noticed your hair falling out more than usual, read on to find out what may be causing it, and what you can do about it.

Excess of, or sensitivity to, the hormone androgen

According to the American Academy of Dermatology, the number one cause of chronic, progressive hair thinning in women is androgenetic alopecia. This condition, thought to be genetic, is characterised by diffuse hair loss all over the scalp, especially on top. An excess of androgens, or “male” hormones, can cause this kind of hair loss, or it can be caused when hair follicles are overly sensitive to the androgens that naturally exist in the body. In either case, the natural solution is to balance hormones and reduce inflammation in the scalp and the body.

If an excess of androgens is the problem, cleaning up your diet by reducing sugar and refined grains and increasing your intake of veggies and healthy fats can be an enormous help. This kind of diet will also help hair loss by reducing inflammation in the body. To fight inflammation even further, try incorporating more foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids, such as salmon, mackerel, walnuts, and chia seeds.

Scalp inflammation can be treated topically in the following way: Add two drops of peppermint oil, two drops of rosemary oil, and two drops of tea tree oil to a tablespoon of carrier oil like coconut or jojoba oil. Massage the mixture into your scalp before you go to bed. Wash as normal in the morning with a natural shampoo or apple cider vinegar.

Nutritional deficiencies

When it comes to hair health, we cannot emphasise enough the importance of eating a balanced, clean, whole-foods diet. Although just about any deficiency or imbalance in your diet can affect your hair, five of the most influential are the vitamins A, B-complex and E, and the minerals zinc and iron. Getting enough of these in your diet can do wonders for your hair and overall health. But before you reach for the bottle of supplements, try incorporating the following foods:

Vitamin A: meat, fish, dairy, cantaloupe, carrots, apricots, and dark leafy greens
B vitamins: red meat, fish, oats, and eggs
Vitamin E: sunflower seeds, almonds, avocados, and dark leafy greens
Zinc: shellfish, red meat, a variety of seeds, chocolate, and spinach
Iron: red meat, organ meat, seeds, and dark leafy greens

Are you noticing a pattern here? Pasture-raised red meat, fish, dark leafy greens and healthy fats are all GREAT for your hair.

Your shampoo

Don’t let the shiny, thick hair you see in advertisements fool you. Many commercial shampoos and conditioners contain products that, over time, can actually irritate your scalp and lead to thinning hair. The biggest offenders are sulfates, which have been shown to damage hair follicles in studies on rats, and sodium chloride and isopropyl alcohol, which have both been linked to dry scalp and hair loss.

The solution for this one is easy. If you haven’t already switched to an organic shampoo with gentle, natural ingredients, now is the time! Shampooing with apple cider vinegar is also a popular, cheap, and effective way to clean your scalp and refresh your locks.

There are a myriad of other reasons for hair loss in women, so if none of the aforementioned causes rings true, you may want to consider talking to a health practitioner about other possibilities. These could include thyroid imbalances, weight loss, stress, pregnancy, menopause, and autoimmune disorders.

Although having a full head of hair is partially dependent on genetics, like all things health-related the health of your hair is highly influenced by your lifestyle and environment. So, if you take the time to be healthy overall, your hair will probably follow suit!

3) HOW TO MAKE THE BEST NONTOXIC SUNSCREEN EVER
by Anya V.

It is hard to find a non-toxic sunscreen because  most of the commercialised versions are loaded with toxic additives and preservatives.  They actually cause cancer instead of preventing it. Those chemicals are absorbed by the skin,  and end up harming the liver, the organ responsible for neutralising chemicals in the body. For this reason, it is necessary to choose a sunscreen that is as pure and natural as possible. If you are looking for an alternative to commercial sunscreens this is a great way to go.

Ingredients

1 tablespoon coconut oil
1 tablespoon beeswax
1 tablespoon avocado oil
5 drops of essential oils of your choice (optional)

 Directions

Put all the ingredients in a glass bowl set on top of a pan of boiling water and melt all the ingredients together. Remove from heat and let cool to room temperature and then add your favourite essential oil (optional). Pour into a wide-mouthed container with a lid.  The sunscreen will thicken some as it cools.  Store in a cool, dry place or in the fridge.
