Selenium is a trace element and mineral that is essential for human life.It is critical to many of our basic physiological functions, including protecting cells from oxidative stress and helping the thyroid produce hormones. It is found in manyselenium-rich fruits and vegetables and some animal products.
To say that selenium is important is an understatement. Low selenium levels are actually linked to conditions such as Keshan disease, heart disease, and infertility. Let’s look at what selenium means to your health.
1. Selenium Is A Powerful Antioxidant
Selenium works as a powerful antioxidant in the body. Antioxidants are substances that slow or prevent cell damage by
neutralising free radicals. Selenium protects against free radicals and oxidative stress. It’s an active immunomodulator and a more potent antioxidant than vitamins A, C, or E.
Selenium combines with other proteins to create selenoproteins such as glutathione peroxidases and thioredoxin reductases. These proteins act as antioxidants to support health at the cellular level.
2. Thyroid Support
The thyroid is a gland in the throat that produces hormones. The hormones produced by the thyroid affect growth and metabolic processes. Compared to other tissue in the human body, the thyroid contains the most selenium per gram. Like iodine, selenium plays an important role in the synthesis of thyroid hormones.
There have been many studies on selenium and thyroid disease, often with mixed or contradictory results. One study linked low selenium levels to thyroid problems in the elderly. Unfortunately, in that instance,
selenium supplementation did little to help.However, another study found that selenium supplementation during pregnancy reduced hypothyroidism and inflammation. Yet another study found selenium supplementation decreases the negative effects of Hashimoto’s thyroiditis.
More research is needed to draw conclusions, but the potential of selenium as it relates to thyroid health is encouraging.
3. Anti-Aging Properties of Selenium
Free radical damage causes the cellular degeneration we know as ageing. As a powerful antioxidant, selenium neutralises the damaging effects of free radicals. One study revealed that selenium levels decline with age and low selenium contributes to cognitive decline in older adults. There is great interest in determining whether selenium supplementation can slow age-related mental impairment. Hopefully, we learn more soon.
4. Encourages Metal Detoxification
among the most toxic of pollutants. Effective ways to detoxify the body of toxic metals are few and far between. The good news? Data suggests that supplementing with organic (carbon-bound) selenium supports mercury excretion.
5. Cardiovascular Support
It’s clear that there is a relationship between selenium concentration and cardiovascular health. Some heart attack patients show low selenium levels and incidences of heart failure caused by selenium deficiency have been reported since as early as 1937. Not only is selenium itself important for cardiovascular support, it works with other nutrients such as vitamin E and beta-carotene to help promote normal cholesterol levels.
6. Reproductive Health
Selenium is critical for both male and female reproductive health. It enables sperm locomotion and a selenium deficiency can lead to male infertility. Studies have found that low selenium can also have a
negative impact on female fertility and fetal growth. There seems to be a link between selenium deficiency and miscarriage, but more research is necessary to determine the exact mechanism.
7. Selenium and Cancer
Studies have observed a trend in which lower concentrations of selenium correlated with an increased risk of certain types of cancer. Although this is an interesting tidbits of information, it shouldn’t be interpreted as an implication that selenium is a treatment or method of prevention for cancer. While selenium has many benefits, there is not conclusive evidence to call it a viable treatment option.
How Selenium Benefits Your Health
We do know that selenium is an essential mineral that’s crucial to many bodily functions. Natural sources, like fruits and vegetables, are the best way to incorporate selenium into your diet. Selenium supplementation may also be appropriate for people who are
experiencing a selenium deficiency. If you’re concerned that you’re not getting enough selenium, talk to your nutritionist and see if selenium supplementation is right for you.

It never ceases to amaze me how our bodies are uniquely equipped to scavenge and eliminate the literally thousands of different toxins we encounter on a daily basis. We are continuously exposed to things like environmental pollution, processed foods, pharmaceutical drugs, contaminated water, and countless other sources of exposure.
And what’s even more amazing to me is that our bodies are designed to do all this…
Even while we’re simultaneously metabolising nutrients from the foods we eat, regulating our blood sugar levels, producing
the hormones we need for life, and all-around maintaining a homeostatic (balanced) state so we can function normally from day to day.
In an ideal world, this process would run smoothly. This is because the amount of good things going into our bodies as fortification would far exceed the amount of bad things. Thus, a toxic overload situation would not occur. Sadly, this isn’t an ideal world!
There are upwards of 70,000 industrial chemicals currently in commercial use, and another 1,000 new ones being introduced every single year. By the way, the vast majority of new chemicals are never properly safety tested and many people are being chemically ambushed.
It happens to such a degree that our bodies are no longer able to eliminate toxins fast enough. This often leads to a toxin-induced health crisis.
Our bodies need additional reinforcements. In other words, we simply aren’t getting the level of nutrient support we
need to protect our vital organs from damage and possible shutdown. Our most critical systems of detoxification, the liver being the most prominent, can only take so much abuse before eventually failing. This is why we have to go above and beyond the norm to protect them with supplemental support.
Why Your Liver Needs Milk Thistle
Your body’s primary line of defence against toxins is the liver, which performs more than 300 critical metabolic functions beyond just detoxification. Recent research published in the journal Current Pharmaceutical Biotechnologyaffirms that silymarin, a lipophilic extract made from milk thistle seeds, mitigates oxidative stress resulting from both alcoholic and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.
Silymarin contains three compounds − silybin, silydianin, and silychristin − that work together to prevent toxins from overburdening the liver. This in turn helps prevent a cascade of other liver failure-related diseases from forming. These include conditions like atherosclerosis, neurodegenerative disease, and cancer.
thistle compounds like silibinin perform similar functions. They help to counter the toxic effects of mycotoxins, organic solvents, pharmaceutical drugs, ethanol, and other substances to which humans are routinely exposed in the modern world.
The ability of silymarin to directly alter the membranes of liver cells gives it a unique ability to stimulate cell regeneration. This means it has the potential to reverse liver damage that’s already occurred. Its antioxidant potential has also been shown to not only stop inflammation but trigger the formation of glutathione. Glutathione is the body’s “master” antioxidant that, based on its immense mechanistic actions, holds the key to vibrant health and longevity.
Silymarin marianum Respected in Scientific Literature
Milk thistle is so effective at preventing and treating inflammatory liver conditions that it holds a coveted spot in the rank of German Commission E Monographs, a
repository of the world’s most respected and clinically-proven herbal and phytonutrient medicines. Milk thistle is duly regarded in the scientific literature as a protective agent against nerve damage, abnormal brain ageing, and cardiovascular disease.
Milk Thistle as a Cancer Treatment
Published studies on milk thistle’s anti-cancer potential show its effectiveness against cancers of the skin, prostate, liver, lung, breast, colon, cervix, and ovaries.
Milk thistle is also powerfully chemoprotective (meaning it protects against damage from cancer drugs). This is why it’s often used as an adjunct in conventional cancer care to help mitigate the toxic effects of chemotherapy and radiation.
The silymarin component of the herb offsets the growth and persistence of various types of cancer cells, including those associated with prostate, skin, and liver cancers. Likewise it exhibits general anti-metastatic
activity, meaning it helps prevent cancer cells from spreading throughout the body and infecting other organs.
Other milk thistle constituents such as silibinin and isosilybin B show their own unique promise in preventing and treating cancer as well. Studies have shown that silibinin extracts derived from milk thistle used both internally and topically help protect against skin cancer.
The Effect of Milk Thistle on Prostate Cancer
Oral ingestion of silibinin has also shown efficacy in preventing the growth, spread, and metastasis of prostate cancer cells, working in part by inducing cell cycle arrest.
Isosilybin B is likewise effective in targeting prostate cancer. It helps to maintain healthy prostate cell division inside the body while suppressing the secretion of prostate-specific antigen (PSA), a common marker of the disease’s presence and spread. Isosilybin B has also shown efficacy in fighting both
hormone-dependent and hormone-independent prostate cancers. It is also efficacious in suppressing a genetic factor linked to the disease’s formation.
How to Take Milk Thistle
Milk thistle can be taken as a powder or liquid extract, or in tablet or capsule form. Both powdered milk thistle and milk thistle seeds can be brewed into a tea. However, many of the healing compounds found in the plant’s seeds are not easily steeped into hot water. This is why some health practitioners recommend eating the seeds whole or grinding them up and adding them to food or drink.
While there’s no official standard for a therapeutic milk thistle dosage, typical usage amounts range from anywhere between 140 milligrams (for mild conditions like seasonal allergies) to 600 milligrams (for more serious health conditions) of silymarin. This should be divided into two or three doses taken throughout the day.
Potential Side Effects
of Taking Silymarin
Milk thistle side effects are generally mild, and both animal and human studies have shown the herb to be generally non-toxic. But taking higher doses can result in upset stomach and diarrhoea. This is due to increased bile secretion and flow, which can also result in a laxative effect. Health authorities advise against pregnant and breastfeeding women using silymarin. If you’re allergic to ragweed, yarrow, daisies, chamomile, chrysanthemums, or marigolds, you should also avoid taking this powerful herb.

Grounding exercises help tremendously with maintaining a balance of our physical and spiritual bodies. As a healer, I have learned that being
energetically grounded allows me to be better equipped in facilitating healing for clients and also to create and maintain wellness in my own life.
Bring Body and Spirit into Balance
In this article I give instruction for the scanning technique I have used for many years to help balance the body/spirit connection. I do this exercise each night while laying in my bed before I sleep. The primary purpose of this exercise is to bring body and spirit into balance.
Doing my body scan exercise at bedtime will work well for anyone who has difficulty falling asleep easily, but for anyone who tends to fall asleep quickly upon hitting their head to the pillow, sitting upright in a chair would be a better alternative.
Diagnostic in nature, this body scan will help you become more fully aware of both subtle and not-so-subtle sensations of your physical body.
This is an excellent tool for
identifying all physical stresses and upsets, especially any underlying imbalances you may have not been aware of. Paincan be so overwhelming in one part of the body that the imbalances in other areas of the body are overshadowed. The body scan is an exercise in assembling the larger hurts alongside the minutest details of stresses which you may have overlooked within your body. It is helpful to bring our awareness to the less obvious.
In addition to the apparent grounding benefits of this body scan exercise, another side benefit is that sometimes the most painful hurts are miraculously lifted from the physical during the body scan process.
For example: A throbbing headache may get temporary or permanent relief by diverting the focus downwards toward the feet and away from the throbbing, although this will be dependent on the severity of the hurt you are experiencing in your head.
Be prepared to be amazed at the discoveries that you will make
about your body during this exercise. Throughout the body scan process keep reminding yourself not to rush.
Grounding Exercise: Body Scan
1. Lay flat on your back on your bed, couch or floor. Position your arms and hands comfortably at your sides. Place a pillow or rolled towel under your knees if your lower back requires support.
2. Begin your body scan by diverting your thoughts away from any mental chatter, switch gears by first focusing on your feet. Do not rush! During the process you will slowly change your focus from one part of your body to the next. Also, you don't need to touch yourself, the scan is mental. Allow your mind to switch focus from wherever it is. Begin with your feet and move upwards.
3. Notice the soles of your feet, your toes, in-between your toes, the top of your feet, ankles, and heel. Do they feel hot? or cold? Do they hurt? Are they numb or swollen? Can you feel the blood
circulating through them? Are they feeling tired? Don't judge how they feel, simply notice how they feel. Wiggle your toes. How does that feel?
4. Once you have a made a strong connection with your feet move your attention upwards past your ankle... switching all your focus from your feet to the lower legs, then move onto your knee caps, behind your knees, your thighs, and so on.
5. Allow yourself to breathe evenly throughout the scanning process. If you come upon any areas of discomfort (stressed muscles, soreness, etc.) or find a spot that feels like there may be stuck energy take two or three deep cleansing breaths to ease the tension or break through energetic blockages.
6. Once you have moved your attention through your torso and up to your neck, drop your focus at your fingertips. Move up your attention through the length of the fingers and into the hands (notice the tops of hands as well as the palms). Continue your energy
scan up your arms and at the shoulders, returning your attention once again to your neck before finishing up with your focus on face, ears, and scalp.
