IN THIS ISSUE: 1) SNACK DIET DOESN'T HELP WEIGHT LOSS 2) MISTLETOE THERAPY FOR CANCER 3) BRAIN TUMOR DISAPPEARED THROUGH NATURAL IV TREATMENT
Eating smaller meals more often does not help overweight people shed their kilos any faster. Dietitians have tested the commonly-held theory that splitting daily food intake into five or six snack-type meals speeds up fat-burning. In a study of 179 obese Australians, they found no weight-loss advantage from following such a diet. "There seems to be little benefit to changing how often or how regularly you eat if you're trying to lose weight," said lead researcher Michelle Palmer, a dietitian at the University of Newcastle. "We found it's not when you eat that matters, but what and how much you eat." The study involved 179 obese men and women who were all on the same healthy, weight-loss diet and with the same kilojoule intake, but with differing eating patterns. One group ate three times a day, while the other added in three extra snacks to try to keep metabolism boosted throughout the day and speed up fat-burning. But results showed no difference in changes in weight, waist measurement, body fatness or blood sugar levels between the groups. Ms Palmer will tell the national dietitians conference on the Gold Coast this week that the findings should end debate on the advantages of snacking and focus Australians back on keeping dieting simple. "Many people find it hard enough to stick to a healthy eating plan to lose weight, let alone worrying about any suggested benefits of snacking or not snacking," she said. Dr Tim Crowe, a nutrition specialist at Deakin University in Melbourne, said the research dispelled a "faddish dieting trend". "It's popular advice yet there's been very little research to show it actually helps with weight loss," Dr Crowe said. "It's rubbish. In fact, there's some research to suggest playing around with when you eat may actually cause you to put weight on." He said dieters should be discouraged from making drastic changes to their eating patterns, but do what works for them. "It's best if they focus on how much they're eating and of course what they're eating," Dr Crowe said. "Six small days at McDonald's clearly isn't going to help you lose weight." The last national nutrition survey found 56 per cent of adults eat between twice to four times a day, while 37 per cent eat five to seven times daily. Source:stuff.co.nz
2) MISTLETOE THERAPY FOR CANCER
Mistletoe extract (Iscador) has been in the news since actress Suzanne Somers announced that she is using it as an adjunctive therapy to fight breast cancer following lumpectomy and radiation. Some medical experts have claimed that there is no scientific evidence to support taking this natural approach. However, a major groundbreaking study was published in the May issue of the peer-reviewed journal Alternative Therapies in Health and Medicine. The study showed that individuals who took mistletoe extract in addition to their conventional medical treatment lived 40% longer. “There is mounting basic science and clinical evidence for the efficacy of mistletoe as an adjunctive cancer therapy for solid tumors.” says David Riley, MD, Editor in Chief of Alternative Therapies, and a Clinical Associate Professor at the University of New Mexico Medical School. “Mistletoe,” Dr. Riley adds, “is the most commonly used cancer drug in Germany today.” The study* followed 35,000 residents of Heidelberg, Germany over 30 years, identifying 5,000 who had cancer. Six hundred of these cancer patients were sorted into pairs. One member of each pair took mistletoe extract in addition to conventional treatment; the other, who had a similar type and stage of disease, received only conventional treatment. After comparing the length of survival, the study concluded that participants who added mistletoe extract to their treatment lived 40% longer than those who did not. Research indicates that mistletoe extract is most effective when used in conjunction with conventional medical care for the treatment of solid tumors such as breast cancer, according to Dr. Riley. It does not appear to be useful as an adjunctive treatment for other cancers like lymphoma or leukemia. *Grossarth-Maticek R, Kiene H, Baumgartner SM, Ziegler R: Use of Iscador, an Extract of European Mistletoe (Viscum Album), in Cancer Treatment. 3) BRAIN TUMOR DISAPPEARED THROUGH NATURAL IV TREATMENT
Ella Hauschildt's tumor disappeared through natural IV treatment. Ella Hope Hauschildt was diagnosed with a brain tumor a month before she turned seven, but after natural remedies, the latest MRI was not able to detect the tumor anymore. Her family believes it was the natural treatment that helped Ella. A month before turning 7, Ella found out she had a inoperable grape-sized brain tumor. She went through 30 radiation treatments, but her family wanted to try an alternative therapy. Her parents took her to Arizona for natural therapy. After 20 IV treatments of vitamins, minerals and amino acids, the tumor was no longer detected in the MRI. Doctors say it is almost impossible that the tumor won’t return, but Ella’s family still remains hopeful. Ella’s family has switched to a mostly organic, natural food.
