1) VITAMINS AND MINERALS
by Dr. Edward Group DC, NP, DACBN, DCBCN, DABFM

Even though they’re in almost everything we eat and drink, many people aren’t exactly clear what the distinction is between vitamins and dietary minerals. We’re told they’re important and we need them to keep us healthy, but what’s the difference?

What Are Vitamins?

Vitamins are organic compounds the human body needs but doesn’t produce enough of on its own; getting them through food or supplementation is necessary. Without, vitamin deficiency may result and can seriously impact our overall health.

There are two categories of vitamins our bodies need, water soluble, and fat soluble. Water soluble vitamins B and C are found in whole grains, fruits, and vegetables. Because they break down easily in water, our bodies flush water-soluble vitamins out through urination, this requires we provide ourselves with an ongoing daily supply.

Fat soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K are absorbed by stored body fat and can be stored for later use. Although our bodies need this type of vitamin less often, over consumption can be dangerous. These are found most abundantly in naturally fatty foods, such as oily fish, dairy, beef. Vegetarian and vegan-friendly sources include a wide variety of fruits and vegetables, although in much lower concentrations than in animal-based options.

One of the easiest ways to distinguish between water-soluble and fat-soluble vitamins, when shopping for food at the store, is to look at the overall percentage of total daily requirement. Water-soluble vitamins will often appear in obscenely large amounts-many over-the-counter multivitamins, for example, contain several hundred, or even thousands of, times the normal recommended amount. Fat-soluble vitamins, conversely, rarely appear in concentrations that exceed 25-50% of their total daily recommended amount.

What Are Minerals?

Minerals are inorganic and found in water and soil. They can also be divided into two categories. “Macro nutrients,” which our bodies need over 100 mg each day, include potassium, chloride, sodium, calcium, phosphorous, and magnesium. The amount of “trace minerals,” or “micro nutrients,” the body needs is significantly less, under 100 mg per day. These include zinc, iron, manganese, copper, iodine, selenium, and molybdenum.

In our bodies, vitamins and minerals support growth, the immune system, and countless biological reactions and processes. The carotenoids in carrots, for example, are converted to vitamin K within the body, hence carrots’ reputation as being good for the eyes. This is just one of the many, many processes vitamins and minerals support.

I personally recommend supplementing your body with an organic source of vitamins and minerals on a regular basis. I use the product IntraMAX® and my children use IntraKID®.

2) GIVE YOUR SKIN A RADIANT MAKEOVER WITH THE BRIGHTENING EFFECTS OF VITAMIN C

We all know the daily grind can get crazy, right? There’s work, errands, and your bustling social life. And then on top of that, you’re supposed to think about skincare? We’re here to help you out.

Let’s face it – a solid skincare regime can make a huge difference. Our skin is vulnerable to so many everyday occurrences, especially photo damage from the sun. Ultraviolet (UV) radiation can jumpstart harmful, and visible, reactions from free radicals. These pesky molecules cause oxidative stress, creating the perfect environment for wrinkles, sun spots, and skin cancer.

Fortunately, you can defend yourself by wearing sunblock, avoiding smoking, and fueling up on foods that are rich in antioxidants, like berries and tomatoes. You can also include antioxidant skincare products in your daily routine for an extra line of defense.

1. Vitamin C
Vitamin C, also known as ascorbic acid, is a popular immune booster. It’s also a powerful antioxidant.

Even skin, your largest organ, needs it. This nutrient is in charge of synthesizing collagen, the main structural protein of skin tissue. It also supports proper wound healing, so it can help out with those lingering acne scars.

Vitamin C is at the forefront of skincare. Vitamin C can help reduce the risk of potential sun-damage as well as help lessen the oxidative stress and immunosuppressive effects caused by UV exposure. It can even help soothe common sunburn symptoms, such as redness and rashes. These benefits can help put your worries about wrinkles and fine lines out of mind.

Compared to oral supplements, topical application takes the cake, as it crosses right through the top layer of skin called the epidermis. Topical application is an awesome, direct way of soaking up vitamin C’s goodness.

2. Lemon
A splash of lemon can spruce up tea or water. But what if it could work some magic on your skin, too? This sour citrus fruit is packed with polyphenols, or plant chemicals, called flavonoids or bioflavonoids. When applied topically, bioflavonoids can boast powerful anti-oxidative properties.

The main flavonoids in lemon are diosmin, hesperidin, and eriocitrin. According to the Journal of Photochemistry and Photobiology, diosmin can block photoaging in the skin. Hesperidin protects against UVB-induced damage, while eriocitrin is a potent antioxidant.Together, these natural compounds combat free radicals. Talk about teamwork.

It might be tempting to dive head first into lemon juice. Hold that thought, though. Lemon is a strong acid that can bother your skin. And once the sun hits, the risk for irritation intensifies. Play it safe by using products that feature lemon as an ingredient. This way, the concentration will be gentler – and safer – for your skin.

3. White Tea
White tea is more than just a restorative drink. It’s also full of those beneficial polyphenols, meaning white tea extracts can work wonders on the skin.

Experimental Dermatology shares that these extracts have antioxidant properties. They work by preventing oxidative stress caused by solar radiation. Using products with white tea as part of your skin care routine can help slow skin damage cause by environmental factors.

Again, it’s all thanks to polyphenols, which are abundant in tea. Brew yourself a cup and sip away. At the same time, look for skincare products that use white tea ingredients. This double-duty protection will be a treat for your skin.

You can even use white tea as a toner. Steep two white tea bags in one cup of hot water. Once it cools down, apply it to your skin with a cotton ball. So fresh, so clean.

3) THE BENEFITS OF YLANG YLANG ESSENTIAL OIL
by Cathy Wong, ND

Ylang ylang essential oil is a type of essential oil commonly used in aromatherapy. Sourced from the flowers of Cananga odorata (a plant native to the Philippines and Indonesia), ylang ylang essential oil is said to offer a variety of health benefits.

One of the main components of ylang ylang essential oil is linalool, a compound found to possess stress-reducing properties in a number of preliminary studies.

How Does Ylang Ylang Essential Oil Work?

In aromatherapy, inhaling the aroma of ylang ylang essential oil (or absorbing ylang ylang essential oil through the skin) is thought to transmit messages to a brain region involved in controlling emotions. Known as the limbic system, this brain region also influences the nervous system. Aromatherapy proponents suggest that essential oils may affect a number of biological factors, including heart rate, stress levels, blood pressure, breathing, and immune function.

Health Benefits of Ylang Ylang Essential Oil

Although research on the health effects of aromatherapeutic use of ylang ylang essential oil is limited, there's some evidence that it may offer certain benefits. Here's a look at some key findings from the available research on ylang ylang essential oil:

1) Stress

Absorbing ylang ylang essential oil through the skin may help reduce stress levels, according to a study published in Phytotherapy Research in 2006.

In tests on 40 healthy volunteers, researchers determined that ylang ylang essential oil helped promote relaxation and decrease blood pressure. The study also found that ylang ylang essential oil may help improve mood.

Additionally, a study published in the International Journal of Neuroscience in 2008 found that inhaling the aroma of ylang ylang essential oil helped increase feelings of calmness.

In an experiment involving 144 people, the study's authors also found that peppermint essential oil enhanced memory and improved alertness.

2) High Blood Pressure

Ylang ylang essential oil may be of some benefit to people with high blood pressure. In a 2012 study published in Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine, for example, researchers asked 83 people with high blood pressure or prehypertension (a condition marked by elevated blood pressure) to inhale the aroma of either a blend of ylang ylang essential oil, lavender essential oil, marjoram essential oil, and neroli essential oil or a placebo fragrance. Study results showed that those assigned to the essential oil group experienced a decrease in blood pressure, as well as in levels of cortisol (a hormone released during the stress response).

Given these findings, the study's authors suggest that essential oils may offer relaxing effects that may be useful in controlling blood pressure. However, it's important to note that it's unknown whether ylang ylang essential oil on its own can help lower blood pressure.

Uses for Ylang Ylang Essential Oil

In aromatherapy, ylang ylang essential oil is typically used for the following problems:

anxiety, athlete's foot, colds, cough, depression, fever, headaches, insomnia, muscle tension, sinus infections.

Ylang ylang essential oil is also used to alleviate stress, relieve pain, reduce inflammation, improve mood, and enhance libido.

In addition, ylang essential oil is said to act as a natural insect repellent, promote wound healing, and diminish the appearance of scars when applied to the skin.

How to Use Ylang Ylang Essential Oil

When combined with a carrier oil (such as jojoba, sweet almond, or avocado), ylang ylang essential oil can be applied directly to the skin. It can also be added to baths. Ylang ylang essential oil also can be inhaled after sprinkling a few drops of the oil onto a cloth or tissue, or by using an aromatherapy diffuser or vaporizer.

Caveats

Ylang ylang essential oil should not be taken internally without the supervision of a health professional. Internal use of ylang ylang essential oil may have toxic effects. In addition, some individuals may experience irritation when applying ylang ylang essential oil to the skin. Essential oils should not be applied full strength to the skin. Pregnant women and children should consult their primary health care providers prior to using essential oils. Learn more tips on how to use ylang ylang essential oil safely.

Where To Find Ylang Ylang Essential Oil

Here are some tips on purchasing essential oils. Widely available for purchase online, ylang ylang essential oil is sold in many natural-foods stores and in stores specializing in self-care products.

Using Ylang Ylang Essential Oil for Health

It's too soon to recommend ylang ylang essential oil for any health condition, due to the lack of supporting research. If you're considering the use of ylang ylang, talk to your doctor first. Keep in mind that essential oils should not be used as a substitute for standard care in treatment of a chronic health condition.
