1) WHEY PROTEIN IS BENEFICIAL FOR YOUR HEART AND BLOOD PRESSURE
By Dr. Mercola

Whey, a byproduct of milk and cheese, has been recommended since ancient times -- as early as 420 B.C. by Hippocrates -- and its sterling reputation continues to be further proven to this day.

The latest study revealed that whey protein has a normalizing effect on blood pressure levels, reducing levels significantly in those at risk of hypertension. This may be due to whey’s impact on nitric oxide production, as nitric oxide helps your vessels maintain their elasticity and its suppression leads to increases in blood pressure.

This benefit extends not only to those with, or at risk of, high blood pressure; it’s important to maintain healthy blood pressure levels too.

One recent study found, for instance, that supplementation with the whey-derived peptide NOP-47 had a positive impact on vascular function in healthy people. Blood flow in the arm improved by 2.7 percent per minute following whey protein supplementation, but did not change for those in the control group who took a placebo.

So in choosing a protein powder as a meal replacement, protein source or exercise recovery drink, you’ll support healthy blood pressure levels just by choosing whey.

What Else Can Whey do for You?

There are numerous reasons to choose whey over other protein powders, even beyond its influence on your blood pressure. For instance, whey protein may:

*Help your pancreas-produced insulin work more effectively, which helps maintain your blood sugar level after a meal
*Promote healthy insulin secretion
*Help to promote your optimal intake of proteins, fats, carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals needed for your overall wellness
*Support your immune system, as it contains immunoglobulins
*Help you preserve lean body tissue (particularly during exercise) as it delivers bioavailable amino acids and cysteine

Whey proteins are complex in and of themselves and each can provide you with even more distinct benefits, such as:

Beta-Lactoglobulin -- may help your body better react to foods
Alpha-Lactalbumin -- supports your immune system and may improve morning alertness
Glycomacropeptide -- provides support against occasional digestive discomfort and stress
Lactoferrin -- helps regulate your intestinal iron absorption and promotes healthy cell growth
Immunoglobulins -- promotes your immune system and helps support your body's natural detoxification processes
Bovine Serum Albumin -- provides a source of essential amino acids
Lactoperoxidase --provides protective benefits for your system

Natural Growth Factors in Whey -- aids your system in cell rejuvenation, muscle recovery after exercise, and energy function

Whey protein can also help optimize your production of glutathione, which is considered by many to be your body’s most powerful antioxidant.

Glutathione has the unique ability of maximizing the activity of all other antioxidants, including vitamins C and E, CoQ10, alpha lipoic acid, and the fresh veggies and fruits you eat. It also removes toxins from your cells and protects you from the damaging effects of radiation, chemicals, and environmental pollutants.

The optimal food source for maximizing your glutathione production is high-quality grass-fed whey protein.

Be Choosy When Choosing Whey

As with many food products and supplements on the market, all whey protein powders are not created equal.

When Consumer Reports recently tested 15 protein powders and drinks, they found three of them contained very worrisome levels of arsenic, cadmium and lead.

Clearly, getting a potentially toxic dose of heavy metals with your daily protein drink is not what you had in mind, which is why it’s so important to pay attention to the quality of your whey protein.

I cannot recommend using nearly any of the commercial whey protein shakes on the market, even if they’re not contaminated, however, because most contain whey protein derived from pasteurized, commercial dairy sources.

Unfortunately, pasteurized milk is almost entirely devoid of glutathione-producing compounds, so you’ll be missing out on this significant health benefit. Many commercial whey products are also artificially sweetened, making them useless from a health perspective.

So when selecting a whey product I strongly recommend making sure it has the following features:

1. Whey is derived from grass-fed cows that are not treated with pesticides or hormones
2. Cold processed, since heat destroys whey's fragile molecular structure
3. Whey protein concentrate, not protein isolates
4. Sweetened naturally, not artificially, and low in carbohydrates
5. Highly digestible -- look for medium chain fatty acids (MCTs), not long chain fatty acids

As part of an overall healthy diet and lifestyle, I strongly believe that whey protein powder that meets the above criteria is a very healthful supplement to your diet, an excellent source of protein, and a powerful supporter of optimal health.

2) BOOST YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM NATURALLY
By Cathy Wong, about.com

Even the healthiest of people get sick every now and then. But by fine-tuning certain aspects of your health routine, such as diet and stress management, you can help strengthen your immune system's defense against bacteria, toxic chemicals, and viruses that cause conditions like the common cold and flu.

Natural Immune Boosters

Here are the five best ways to support your immune system naturally.

1) Diet

Following a diet rich in antioxidants is essential to supporting your immune system. Abundant in many fruits and vegetables, antioxidants combat free radicals (chemical by-products known to damage DNA and suppress the immune system).

Choosing healthy fats (such as the omega-3 fatty acids available in oily fish, flaxseed, and krill oil) over saturated fats (found in meat and dairy products) may help increase your body's production of compounds involved in regulating immunity.

For an additional immune boost, try adding garlic (shown to possess virus-fighting and bacteria-killing properties) and ginger (a natural anti-inflammatory) to your meals on a regular basis.

Drinking plenty of water and steering clear of sugary beverages, like soda and energy drinks, may also help fend off infection by flushing out your system.

2) Exercise

Working out regularly can mobilize your T cells, a type of white blood cell known to guard the body against infection. In a 2006 study of 115 women, participants who engaged in moderate exercise (such as brisk walking) for an average of 30 minutes daily for a year had about half the risk of colds as those who did not work out routinely.

Regularly engaging in intense, vigorous activity like running, on the other hand, may weaken your immune function and leave you more susceptible to viral infections. However, animal-based research suggests that supplementing with the antioxidant quercetin could reduce flu risk among athletes.

3) Stress Reduction

Chronic stress can have a negative impact on immunity, according to a 2004 review of 293 studies with a total of 18,941 participants. The review suggests that while short-term exposure to stressors can rev up your immune defense, prolonged stress may wear down the immune system and increase your vulnerability to illness.

To keep your stress in check, incorporate a relaxing practice like meditation, yoga, or deep breathing into your daily routine. Or try tai chi, a gentle Chinese martial art found to increase immune defense against shingles in a 2007 study of 112 older adults.

4) Sleep and Hygiene

Simply keeping your hands clean is one of the best ways to ward off illness, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Make sure to wash your hands for 15 to 20 seconds (using warm water and soap) before preparing food or eating and after coughing, sneezing, using the bathroom, or touching public surfaces.

Another healthy habit vital to preventing sickness is getting a full eight hours of sleep each night, which may help regulate immune function.

5) Herbs and Supplements

Although scientists have yet to determine whether vitamin C can enhance immunity, there's some evidence that this antioxidant can reduce cold incidence.

Herbs such as astragalus, echinacea, and elderberry, meanwhile, may help reduce the duration and severity of your sickness if taken as soon as you start to experience cold or flu symptoms.

3) 7 SUPERFOODS THAT HELP YOU LOOK YOUNG
By Frank Mangano

The anti-aging market has become a multi-million dollar industry. It cannot be denied that more and more people wants to hold on to the healthier days of their youth. But the search for the elusive fountain of youth is still an on-going process. Big companies have invested years and years of research, funded by millions of dollars, in order to perfect serums, creams and pills that could fulfill the anti-aging promise.

If you want to continue looking and feeling young and to age gracefully, the best way is to really start a healthy regimen at an early age. Eat smart, eat healthy and avoid ways that could possibly cause you to age faster than usual. Healthy lifestyle choices you could make would include not smoking, getting enough rest and sleep, cutting down on the consumption of alcoholic beverages, exercising regularly and eating foods that are rich in antioxidants. You may have heard of antioxidants, of course. These are substances that help neutralize free radicals which can actually speed up aging. The more you are aware of the right foods to eat, the lesser you would have to worry about premature aging.

The following are excellent food choices. These are called superfoods because not only do they help promote good health, they also help you look young too:

Crunchy Veggies
A person’s dental and oral hygiene says a lot about the condition of his overall health. Surprisingly, some dentists could even diagnose a number of diseases simply by just looking at your teeth. A pretty smile usually goes a long way, and it can seriously impact social and romantic relationships. Keep in mind that healthy relationships with people can also help keep you happy, and laughter helps keep you young.

For healthy gums and teeth, go for vegetables that are firm – those that give you the crunch as soon as you bite in them. Excellent examples are broccoli and celery. These help you scrub your teeth clean and keep your gums healthy too.

Yogurt
The unsweetened kind of yogurt is actually good for you. It contains lactic acid which helps kill the bacteria that is associated with periodontal diseases. Once again, a healthy mouth and a healthy set of teeth allows you to smile to strangers, talk to people easily without the fear of having breath and form meaningful relationships with people who matter. When choosing which yogurt to buy, remember to read the label. Skip those that contain high amounts of sugar because instead of warding off bacteria, it can actually promote bacterial growth inside your mouth because of it being too sweet.

Green Tea
Green tea is refreshing, we all know that. But did you know that it also provides you with a variety of health benefits? Green tea has been known to improve one’s physical stamina, promote weight loss, and it can also protect you from developing dementia, heart disease and cancer. What’s more is that all these claims are backed up by years of clinical research studies from various laboratories.

Green tea is power-packed with polyphenols called catechins. These are chemicals which has antioxidant properties. It is especially good for the skin because it exerts a protective effect against sun damage. Drinking about 2 cups of green tea per day can help you maximize its health benefits.

Pomegranate
The New York Times, medical periodicals and industry journals have dubbed pomegranate as the most powerful anti-aging food there is. Pomegranates are packed with antioxidant-containing compounds known as phytochemicals. These help maintain the integrity of our cells and protect them from the negative effects of free radicals. Free radicals are by-products of the oxidative processes inside our body, and these are blamed as the culprits for various diseases such as diabetes, heart ailments and cancer.

Pomegranates contain tannins, an active polyphenol that is said to be 3 times stronger than those found in green tea and red wine. If you wish to avail of the health benefits of pomegranates, you may simply utilize its juice.

Avocado
The avocado has been known as an anti-aging superfruit. Aside from its healthy oleic acid, avocadoes are also chock full of potent carotenoid antioxidants called vitamin E, zeaxanthin and lutein. These antioxidants help lessen oxidative stress and promote an environment that is healthy for cells. Avocadoes also contain folate and potassium necessary for the proper functioning of the heart. These elements help remove waste from the body which, when left to accumulate in the tissues and the blood stream, can be a source of different illnesses.

When looking to buy an avocado and you want it already ripe, try to feel its consistency. Do not merely rely on the color. Good, ripe avocadoes have a slight give to them when touched.

Grapefruit
Grapefruits help keep you young in three ways: First, it slows down cell aging. The healthier your cells are, the healthier you will be. The spermidine in grapefruit helps our cells grown and mature, and it has also been found to slow down aging by inducing the regenerative processes in our cells.

Second, grapefruits contain lycopene, a powerful antioxidant that fights cell aging that is triggered by the effects of free radicals. Aside from its anti-aging effects, lycopene also helps lower ones risk of developing lung, colon and prostate cancer.

Third, grapefruit is packed with soluble fiber which helps remove cholesterol during the digestive process. When cholesterol is prevented from entering the bloodstream, high blood pressure and cardiovascular diseases are prevented from forming as well.

Berries
Berries are excellent sources of antioxidants which help prevent free radicals from exerting its negative effects on our skin. This must be the reason why berries are considered as the best anti-wrinkle fruits. Also, these fruits contain fiber which is necessary in the elimination of toxic wastes in such a way that it promotes proper digestion.

Now that you know the right foods to eat to help keep you look young, there is no excuse for you not to eat them.
