What comes first in your mind when you think of bitter gourd, obviously, its strong and bitter taste? Although this vegetable tastes bitter it has high nutritional values and health benefits.

Apart from being eaten mainly as vegetable in India and South East Asia, it is particularly established as a folk medicine due to its medicinal properties. It is also called bitter melon or balsam pear. Scientifically it is known by the name Momordica Charantia.

Nutrients present in the bitter gourd include phosphorus, manganese, magnesium and zinc. It is also among the best-known sources of thiamine, foliate and riboflavin. Its vitamin content includes Vitamin B1, B2, B3 and Vitamin C. Apart from these it is also a rich source of calcium, iron and beta-carotene.

Bitter gourd is very beneficial for people suffering from diabetes. Consuming bitter gourd daily on an empty stomach is found very good and effective. Mind it do not do excessive consumption as it may lead to diarrhea and other stomach problems.

Its juice contains polypeptide, which is similar to insulin and can be used as an alternative to insulin in diabetic people. It helps in bringing down the sugar levels in blood and urine. This polypeptide is also known as ‘plant-insulin’.

Juice of bitter gourd leaves is found useful in the treatment of alcoholism. It repairs the liver after alcohol has been consumed. Its juice mixed with milk is beneficial for people suffering from piles. Paste of its root can be applied over piles for relief.

Regular use of bitter gourd juice boost body stamina and fights chronic fatigue syndrome. It also struggle blood boils and itching caused by bacterial toxic material in the blood. The beta-carotene content in bitter gourd helps in controlling eye disorders and enhances eyesight.

Since bitter gourd contains zero cholesterol and fats, its consumption lowers hypertension. It purifies blood and improves the blood circulation in the body.

Medicinal Properties of Bitter Gourd

Do you ever wonder that in the ancient times, when people did not have an access to medical facilities as available today, how they used to treat themselves?

In fact, in those times, people were more healthy and strong. After all, what were the reasons behind their vigor and longevity and the answer is nature. Mother Nature has given us solutions for every problem.

People at that time had developed a sound understanding of nature and they used to respect its blessings. Today, only the opposite is true. We ignore natural solutions and treat nature as our servant.

If you talk about Ayurveda, each of its reference is a science in itself and medicinal value of bitter gourd suggested in Ayurveda. With its qualities, this vegetable is a natural blood purifier. It has a healthy impact on liver and is effective in controlling diabetes.

You can even apply its juice on to the affected area and cure a painful ailment such as arthritis. It has been advised that eating bitter gourd can also heal joint pains.

This magical vegetable can also work wonders in keeping up good digestion and has anti-inflammatory properties. No doubt, it is quite bitter and that is why people keep distance from it. However, the bitterer it is the more sweet it gets for your overall health care.

It is useful for people suffering from piles also. Lots of times, piles do not come under control with modern medicines and doctors suggest the patient to go for a surgery. Such patients are recommending trying one tablespoon of bitter gourd juice along with some sugar, two times a day. Just do it at least for a week and you would feel the difference by yourself?

Further if your children are suffering stomach worms, just make them gulp one tea spoon of bitter gourd for three to four day. No medicine can be as effective as this natural remedy. You just need to persuade your child to gulp it anyways. Nevertheless, bitter gourd juice can also prevent jaundice, if taken at very early stages.

Swine flu is an upper respiratory infection caused by a virus. The main symptoms associated with Swine flu includes flu like symptoms such as Fever, chills, cold, cough, body aches, sore throat etc. Some other respiratory symptoms associated with it include rhino-rhea, nasal congestion, vomiting, diarrhea, headache etc. it is a communicable disease and can easily spread from an infected person to a healthy person when he/she comes in contact the infected individual.

One can take the precautions to prevent the infection. When you go out cover your nose and mouth with a handkerchief. Wash your hands when you come back from outside, and before eating the food. Do not use other person’s towels, utensils etc. who are infected by the virus. Avoid going out if you are feeling sick.

Antiviral medications are available in the market that is given to prevent the viral infection. These may cause unwanted side effects. Ayurveda gives you natural herbs that are safe and effective and do not cause any side effects.

In Ayurveda, respiratory infection is believed to be the result of weakened immunity. Your body does not have the power to fight against the harmful disease causing germs. Ayurvedic herbs help to strengthen your immunity to fight against the harmful germs. First of all medicines are given to bring the digestive system on the track. Medicines such as Guduchi (licorice), Tulasi (Holy Basil), Sahadevi, Neem (Indian Margosa Tree), Shunthi (ginger), Pippali (pepper) etc. are given to correct the digestive fire. Once the digestive system is under control, herbs such as Triphala, Rasna, Eranda, Guggulu can be used to relieve the symptoms.

Person with weak immunity is advised to take a very light diet. Oily and Fatty food should not be taken when you are infected with the virus and your immunity is weak. You can add spices such as cumin seeds, asafetida, turmeric, coriander etc in your food that help in boosting the digestion and also helps in cleansing your system. Other important herbs that are effective are Elderberry extract, Echinacea extract and Vitamin C (ascorbic acid).

If your nose is stuffed you can use the oil of eucalyptus (nilgiri in Ayurveda) that is found to be very effective in such condition. For stuffed nose, you can also put a few drops of this oil in the lukewarm water and take steam. You will immediately get relief from the blocked nose. You will feel better.

Patient is advised to take complete rest as a good sleep and rest helps in the fast recovery.

One should take good diet while suffering from the Swine flu. Some of the important ayurvedic herbs used for Swine flu include MAHA-LAXMI VILAS RAS, ABHRAK BHASM, SHRUNG BHASM, RAS SINDUR, SHRUNGYADI CHURNA, TALISHADI CHURNA, TRIBHUVAN KIRTI RAS, and GAUJIWHYADI KWATH.

Some of the important ayurveci herbs that are used as a preventive for swine flu include SAPTAPARNA (Alstonia scholaris), KUTAKI (Picrorhiza Kurroa) CHIRAITA (Swertia Chirata), the seed powder of LATA KARANAJ (Caesalpinia Crista) and GILOY SATWA, take all herbs and grind them together in equal proportions to make powder. Take 2 Grams of this powder two times in the day, once in the morning and once in the evening with honey or lukewarm water.

Medicines such as Tribhuvan-Kirti-Ras, Sitopaladi-Churna, Triphal-Guggulu, Maha-Sudarshan-Churna, Shwas-Kuthar-Ras, Laxmi-Narayan-Ras, Sut-Shekhar-Ras and Samshamani-Vati are proved to be very effective to treat the flu-like symptoms of fever, body ache and cough.

Ayurveda has proved to be very effective system of medication as it does not produce any side effects and all the medicines are safe and effective without any side effects. Persons who have good immunity are affected less by the virus whereas persons who have weak immunity are affected easily. Symptom complex of swine flu are believed to be same as that of kapha-vata jvara. Thus, herbs such as guduchi, shunthi (ginger), kantakari are effective for Swine flu. All these herbs are proved to very effective in fever. These herbs also help to build up your immunity and fight against the virus. Once your digestive fire is on the track, all other symptoms also go away.

Another important herb used for respiratory infections is Pippali. If there is excessive secretion of mucus from the lungs, it is the best herb that will help to reduce the inflammation of the respiratory tract. These herbs can he given in acute cases of swine flu and also to prevent infection.

Tulsi has been proved to be an effective herb in fighting with the symptoms of swine flu. Tulsi helps in sore throat, stuffed nose and other flu like symptoms. It also provides strength to your immune system.

Different herbs are prescribed since ancient times to prevent any infection in the body. All the natural herbs used in Ayurvedic system of medicines are safe and do not cause any side effects. It helps to treat the disease from its root cause.

Using egg whites can tighten pores while egg yolks are a good source of vitamin A for reducing wrinkles and moisturizing skin.

Honey is another popular ingredient for homemade skin and facial masks. Not only does honey have moisturizing properties but it also has antimicrobial properties which mean it can fight the germs that cause breakouts.

Plain yogurt is great for natural recipes for skin masks. The yogurt is soothing on the skin and the lactic acid in it is perfect for refining pores and reducing the appearance of wrinkles.

Mashed banana can help with oily skin along with citrus fruits.

Easy Recipes for Skin Care

1. For tightening pores, whip two cold egg whites together until they form peaks. Add a pinch of cornstarch until blended. Immediately apply the egg white mixture to your face and other skin areas and leave on for 15 to 20 minutes. Next, simply rinse off the egg white mixture with cool water. Avoid warm or hot water as it can dry your skin.

2. Soothing your dry skin and erasing fine lines is easy with a homemade green skin mask. Mash one avocado together with half a cup of oatmeal and one-third cup of honey. Once the ingredients are well-mixed, apply the mixture to your face and other skin areas and allow to set for 15 to 20 minutes. Rinse this mushy green mask away with cool water.

3. Mash one peeled banana with a tablespoon of honey and a few drops of freshly squeezed juice from your favorite acidic citrus fruit. Once mixed together, apply it to your oily skin and leave on for 15 to 20 minutes. Rinse the skin mask away with a cool washcloth.

4. To soothe your skin, mix two tablespoons of plain yogurt with two tablespoons of oatmeal and a little bit of honey. Spread the concoction on your face and other skin areas and then leave on for about 15 minutes. Rinse with cool or lukewarm water.

Once your finances improve and you can afford your fancy creams and lotions again, you will likely decide to save your money and stick with some of these homemade skin remedies. They are much cheaper and the natural ingredients mean you are not adding man-made chemicals to your skin. In other words, these natural recipes are good for you!
