Besides sharing time with family and friends over food, the primary ingredient of the American Thanksgiving holiday is gratitude. While it’s certainly good to have an annual holiday to remind us to express gratitude, there’s much to be said for the benefits of cultivating the spirit of thankfulness year-round.

People who are thankful for what they have are better able to cope with stress, have more positive emotions, and are better able to reach their goals. Scientists have even noted that gratitude is associated with improved health.

As noted in a previous article on this topic published in the Harvard Mental Health Letter, “expressing thanks may be one of the simplest ways to feel better:”

“The word gratitude is derived from the Latin word gratia, which means grace, graciousness, or gratefulness (depending on the context). In some ways gratitude encompasses all of these meanings. Gratitude is a thankful appreciation for what an individual receives, whether tangible or intangible.

With gratitude, people acknowledge the goodness in their lives. In the process, people usually recognize that the source of that goodness lies at least partially outside themselves.

As a result, gratitude also helps people connect to something larger than themselves as individuals — whether to other people, nature, or a higher power.

…People feel and express gratitude in multiple ways. They can apply it to the past (retrieving positive memories and being thankful for elements of childhood or past blessings), the present (not taking good fortune for granted as it comes), and the future (maintaining a hopeful and optimistic attitude).

Regardless of the inherent or current level of someone’s gratitude, it’s a quality that individuals can successfully cultivate further.”

Gratitude—It Does a Body Good

Dr. P. Murali Doraiswamy, head of biologic psychology at Duke University Medical Center once stated that: “If [thankfulness] were a drug, it would be the world’s best-selling product with a health maintenance indication for every major organ system.”

One way to harness the positive power of gratitude is to keep a gratitude journal or list, where you actively write down exactly what you’re grateful for each day. In one study, people who kept a gratitude journal reported exercising more, and they had fewer visits to the doctor compared to those who focused on sources of aggravation.

As noted in a previous ABC News article, studies have shown that gratitude can produce a number of measurable effects on a number of systems in your body, including:

* Mood neurotransmitters (serotonin and norepinephrine)
* Reproductive hormones (testosterone)
* Social bonding hormones (oxytocin)
* Cognitive and pleasure related neurotransmitters (dopamine)
* Inflammatory and immune systems (cytokines)
* Stress hormones (cortisol)
* Blood pressure and cardiac and EEG rhythms
* Blood sugar

Ways to Cultivate Gratitude

Cultivating a sense of gratitude will help you refocus your attention toward what’s good and right in your life, rather than dwelling on the negatives and all the things you may feel are lacking.

And, like a muscle, this mental state can be strengthened with practice. Besides keeping a daily gratitude journal, other ways to cultivate a sense of gratitude include:

Write thank you notes: Whether in response to a gift or kind act, or simply as a show of gratitude for someone being in your life, getting into the habit of writing thank-you letters can help you express gratitude in addition to simply feeling it inside.

Count your blessings: Once a week, reflect on events for which you are grateful, and write them down. As you do, feel the sensations of happiness and thankfulness you felt at the time it happened, going over it again in your mind.

Pray: Expressing thanks during your prayers is another way to cultivate gratitude. Mindfulness meditation: Practicing “mindfulness” means that you’re actively paying attention to the moment you’re in right now. A mantra is sometimes used to help maintain focus, but you can also focus on something that you’re grateful for, such as a pleasant smell, a cool breeze, or a lovely memory.

Expanding the Science and Practice of Gratitude

Three years ago, the Greater Good Science Center at the University of California, in collaboration with the University of California, launched a project called “Cultivating Gratitude in a Consumerist Society.” This $5.6 million project aims to:

Expand the scientific database of gratitude, particularly in the key areas of human health, personal and relational well-being, and developmental science;

Promote evidence-based practices of gratitude in medical, educational, and organizational settings and in schools, workplaces, homes and communities, and in so doing…

Engage the public in a larger cultural conversation about the role of gratitude in civil society.

In 2012, 14 winning research projects were announced, with topics covering everything from the neuroscience of gratitude, to the role of gratitude for the prevention of bullying. The organization has a number of resources you can peruse at your leisure, including The Science of Happiness blog and newsletter,7 and a Digital Gratitude Journal, where you can record and share the things you’re grateful for. Scientists are also permitted to use the data to explore “causes, effects, and meaning of gratitude.”

For example, previous research has shown that employees whose managers say “thank you” feel greater motivation at work, and work harder than peers who do not hear those “magic words.” As noted in a previous Thanksgiving blog post in Mark’s Daily Apple: “Research has shown that being on the receiving end of a person’s gratitude can boost subjects’ sense of self-worth and/or self-efficacy. It also appears to encourage participants to further help the person who offered the gratitude but also another, unrelated person in an unconscious ‘pay it forward’ kind of connection.”

Cultivating an Attitude of Gratitude as Part of a Healthy Lifestyle

Starting each day by thinking of all the things you have to be thankful for is one way to put your mind on the right track. Also, remember that your future depends largely on the thoughts you think today. So each moment of every day is an opportunity to turn your thinking around, thereby helping or hindering your ability to think and feel more positively in the very next moment.

Most experts agree that there are no shortcuts to happiness. Even generally happy people do not experience joy 24 hours a day. But a happy person can have a bad day and still find pleasure in the small things in life.

Be thankful for what you have. When life gives you a 100 reasons to cry, remember the 1,000 reasons you have to smile. Face your past without regret; prepare for the future without fear; focus on what’s good right now, in the present moment, and practice gratitude. Remember to say “thank you”—to yourself, the Universe, and others. It’s wonderful to see a person smile, and even more wonderful knowing that you are the reason behind it! This is the season…. to be sick. When I’m out and about these days, I find myself using my arms in a shielding manner to protect myself as if the nearby sneezer were a sword-wielding villain. Despite the corny analogy, these annual germs truly can be worrisome – so I’ve composed a list of some of the most beneficial healing crystals and essential oils for keeping you healthy and your immune system in tip top shape!

There are many essential oils with antibacterial and antiviral properties. If you kill the germs before they can manifest into symptoms, your family will be sniffle-free this winter.

According to the National Institute of Health, the main ingredient in clove oil has anesthetic properties and can soothe pain. Eugenol also supports the body’s natural defenses as well as the body’s natural response to stress. Clove oil has been found to have anti fungal properties as well as the ability to combat candida overgrowth. This was discovered by the researchers at the University of Porto in Portugal.

Cinnamon bark is commonly used to support a healthy immune system. Have you heard all the buzz surrounding the Thieves essential oil blend? In our home, this is the most valuable item I have for the winter sniffles and germs. This oil blend contains powerful essential oils (Clove, Cinnamon Bark, Rosemary, Lemon, and Eucalyptus) that protect and defend, and as a dietary supplement it can support the immune system. It can be diffused to kill 99.99% of airborne bacteria and purify the air. This fact was scientifically tested at the Weber State University in Ogden, Utah. It was also scientifically proven in 2006, when Manchester University published their findings that in every single case study of an extensive hospital research project, the Thieves oil blend killed the hospital super bug MRSA 100% of the time. Yes, I quoted that right. 100%! This blend was supposedly based off of the oils that 15th century grave robbers would rub on to protect themselves from the Plague. You can see why I have completely stocked up!

Essential oils can be diffused to purify the air while and also inhaled for their aromatic benefit. They can be added to hot tea or some warm apple cider (always read the label to make sure the oil is safe for consumption or if dilution is recommended) or diluted with a carrier oil into a capsule. Some argue that the most beneficial way to use essential oils is to apply them topically to the skin or reflexology points on the bottoms of your feet. I even made a counter top spray to replace the chemical filled Lysol spray I used to go through so quickly every cold season.

It has been said that from the moment of contact with your skin, the essential oil is completely absorbed into your blood stream within 21 minutes. This is why I can only recommend that you use the essential oils from a company that, 1. Ethically sources all oils 2. Distills with low temperatures and low pressure – in a sterile environment 3. Grows without the use of herbicides or pesticides 4. Has no expiration date on their oils and 5. Sells only therapeutic grade oils that are safe to ingest and have nutrition facts on the bottle.

If we prevent germs, there should be no need to seek comfort from the symptoms, but should discomfort arise, the following oils may be of some help.

The RC or the Raven essential oil blends both contain eucalyptus and peppermint along with other powerful essential oils that make for a warming, soothing rub for your chest or throat.

Peppermint is an amazing oil for soothing the digestive tract and I have found that the Young Living DiGize blend helps to aid healthy digestion as well as calm the occasional upset or crampy stomach.

If the spirit is healthy, if energy flows freely throughout out chakras without facing any blockages, then we can trust that our bodies are relatively stress free. Stress is a huge factor when it comes to keeping your immune system functioning at it’s best. The less stress one has, the less likely they are to incur serious illness or pick up wintertime viruses. The more stress one has, the more likely it is that their immune system, healthy eating habits, and sleeping patterns are all taking a hit.

I have found that the following crystals are excellent for helping one to eliminate stress and in effect, keep a healthy mind and body. The following information on crystals was obtained from Judy Hall’s The Crystal Bible.

Smithsonite is a stone of peace, charm, stability, and tranquility. It is an excellent stone for relieving stress as it can form a buffer against life’s problems and help to align all the chakras. Smithsonite is also said to heal dysfunctional immune systems.

Blue Tourmaline or Indicolite carries within it an immense, radiating peace and can dissolve feelings of sadness. It is said to benefit the immune systems as well as the pulmonary and brain. It may also stimulate an urge for spiritual freedom and self clarity. Multicolored Gem Tourmaline or Elbaite is known to bring mind, body, and soul together and also may stimulate the immune system.

Moss Agate is not only an extremely stabilizing and earth connected stone, but it can also aid new beginnings as well as attract abundance. This stone helps improve self esteem while also helping one to release deep-seated fears. Moss Agate can help to reduce and alleviate stress and encourage optimism. It is said to be an anti-inflammatory stone that boosts the immune system.

Brown and Picture Jasper are both balancing stones that are deeply connected to the earth. They are excellent stones for alleviating environmental stresses such as electromagnetic smog or pollution. Both forms of Jasper are said to boost the immune system and help eliminate toxins or pollutants from the body.

Lapis Lazuli brings deep peace and helps to reduce stress quickly. This is a stone of serenity that harmonizes all levels of being (physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual). Lapis Lazuli can aid in alleviating pain and is said to help cleanse and boost the immune system.

Last but not least, Turquoise is an excellent healer of the spirit and dispels negative energy as well as electromagnetic pollution. It is a strengthening stone that provides inner calm and can enhance the immune system.

Before I go, I really can’t stress the thieves oil blend enough! It’s truly been a life saver for our family. If it can kill MRSA then I feel safe assuming that it, combined with an effective stress management plan like crystal healing, reiki, yoga, etc. can protect me from the endless harmful particles that I encounter and breathe on a daily basis. You can find all of the essential oils I mentioned above here. Healing crystals and essential oils can be of great help, but be sure to eat properly as well – avoid too many GMOs and processed and packaged foods. Insuring that the body gets the nutrition it needs is an equally important step to take towards maintaining optimum health in the chilly months ahead!

Binaural Beats With Brainwave Entrainment

Passers-by outside the Kennedy Center could hear the entire building tremble. Reverberations from the Korean drumming troupe reached new crescendos. Inside,the audience were agog but not a neck was nodding. The rhythmic beats of the drums had zoned the crowd out to a hypnotic trance. Drum patterns have been influencing brain states since ancient times, but only recently, modern man has come to understand the power of binaural beats behind this phenomenon.

The use of auditory stimulation to induce meditative states and alter consciousness has been growing in popularity. Binaural beats are a form of mind altering brainwave entrainment. When two sounds close in frequency are played, one into each ear, the brain synthesizes these frequencies to produce a third, lower frequency equal to the difference between the two.

For example, frequencies of 250 and 260 hertz (hz) would create a binaural beat of 10 hz. This low frequency beat plays in a rhythmic pattern due to a wavering effect, or oscillation, within the central nervous system. One of the most powerful applications of binaural beats is in brainwave entrainment: the ability to tune into specific brainwaves such as alpha, beta, theta, delta or gamma, for example to control brainwave activity. In brainwave entrainment, binaural beats have numerous applications, including to:

~ Achieve a deeper state of relaxation during meditation. When neurotransmitters in the brain pick up brainwave activity, they begin to make changes in brainwave activity. Binaural beats allow one to choose specific frequencies to achieve the desired meditation result. For example, deep relaxation can be achieved with binaural beats in the alpha range (7-11 Hz). For a deeper meditation, try theta (4-6 Hz) waves. Lucid dreaming is achieved in the delta (<4 Hz) range.

~ Alter consciousness. Meditation is the act of altering consciousness. The experience may range from achieving a deeper state of relaxation, more alpha waves to experiencing more extreme changes in consciousness, such as one that can induce an out-of-body experience (OBE).

~ Binaural beats activate the brain's reticular activating system which, in turn, stimulates the thalamus and cortex, altering the elements of consciousness. Mental states that can be affected by expanding consciousness include arousal states, attentional focus and level of awareness, according to the Monroe Institute, which pioneered work in brainwave entrainment and binaural beats in the 60s and 70s. The Monroe Institute views binaural beats as one of several techniques used in a guided induction process to alter consciousness. A seminar or brainwave entrainment tape is a good place to start.

~ Reduce symptoms of ADD/ADHD. Symptoms of ADD/ADHD, one of the autism spectrum disorders, include social, behavioural and language deficits. Although the exact causes of ADD/ADHD are still being investigated, these deficits relate to underactive areas of the brain caused by abnormal brainwave frequencies that affect beta brainwaves. When it comes to normalizing brainwave activity in a person with ADD/ADHD, binaural beats can hit just the right frequencies.

~ Binaural beats have been applied in many other areas, including sleep induction, pain management, stress reduction and in the treatment of depression.

Brainwave entrainment through binaural beats is a powerful and easily accessible tool for inducing a new state of mind. If the shamanic drummers could use binaural beats to harmonize the earth's frequencies, consider the life-enhancing benefits of actively using them in your life.
